Editing

Today was supposed to be our first day of editing. However we ran into a lot of problems trying to get our film edited. First when I walked into class Mrs. Cats told us to prepare for our second day of filming. I was surprised to hear her say that because I thought we only had one day to film our commercial. I found the other members of my group and told them we were supposed film today and no one was aware. Another problem was our actor didn’t have any of his track gear. I was getting frustrated with the whole situation. After we decided we were just going to keep what we originally filmed. So we got on the computer and this biggest problem of all day came up. We couldn’t find our commercial on the computer.

I logged into my computer account just to make sure that it’s wasn’t on my account. Of course it wasn’t on my account. I logged into my other group member login which I was sure I used to dump our commercial on. So as I’m waiting for the computer to login, I’m thinking of all the things that could’ve went wrong it had to be this. Even trying to open pinnacle studios half of the computers in the classroom didn’t have pinnacle studios on it. I tried to change our computers 3 times. The first time we change computers she came up to us and told the computer we were using didn’t have pinnacle on it. So we moved across the room. I get onto the computer and when I look up I see a sign that says the computer didn’t have internet. I already felt  frustrated already so at this point I wanted to give up. Ms.Cats made an announcement to the class that pinnacle studios and the computers were acting up so we didn’t have to edit. I felt relief go through my body when she said this

Filming Commercial

Today was our first day of filming. When I woke up this morning I automatically dread the thought of filming today. All I was thinking of is everything that could go wrong. I was most worried about it raining and not being able to use the track. Somehow my nervousness slowed turned into excitement I wanted the best video possible. Around the room you could feel everyone's energy before they went out and filmed.Walking out onto the track I saw that it was dry and empty. I felt a sigh of relief leave my body as soon as I saw that. The first problem of the morning hit us soon after that. We got on the track and we forgot to grab the headphones we needed for the first scene. I had to run back to the room and grab them. In my head I was praying that was the only problem we faced today.
Unfortunately weren’t so lucky that day. I got back to the track and we started setting up all the props that we would need for the commercial. We had some trouble getting the tripod open. After 15 minutes of fighting (not literally) we finally got it opened. However by the time we got it opened the whole gym class walked onto the track. I automatically wanted to give up right then and there. We saw the way to get our this is to film the opening scene of where he just enter. We figured by the time we finished the first take they would be gone. Once again we were wrong. They stayed there until almost the end of class. We have to wait until the class was on the opposite side of the track to film the scene where he is warming. Even with this plan they would throw balls so we had to do multiple takes of that one scene. It was hot so I was irradiated and when people kept walking into our shot I felt like I was going to explode
After what felt like forever we were done to our last two scenes we were getting prepared and then ROTC comes out and starts doing workouts right in the area where we were suppose to film. We decided to move onto the other side of the track once again. The problem with this side of the track was the trees were blocking the sun. Therefore, our lighting kept going in and out depending on the position of the sun. Finally we had everything we needed to film the last two scenes. I was in charge of filming the scene where was running. The first take I wasn’t sure that the camera was recording. So we had to so that scene two more times just to make sure we got it. I could tell the actor was getting tired so I felt bad for not getting it right the first time. Finally we got the last scene of the close up and left. The bell had already rung and we didn't even dump our footage onto the camera yet. When we got back to the room I had to stay after to get it dumped. However, like the whole morning the computers were being difficult and didn't want to load. After asking Ms. Cats for help I got everything onto the computer and could finally be done with the whole. I don’t think my first of filming could have gotten any worse, but I got through it.

Planning Blog for Nike commercial

Our group will be using the track to film our Nike commercial. The actor will walk up to the track with headphones on while music is playing in the background. He will have his Nike tracksuit on and will start warming up. Then he takes off his tracksuit and start putting on his Nike spikes and sprinting clothes. He will walk up to the block and get in.The camera will zoom in on his shoes and clothes. Emphasizing the product we’re trying to sell. The music will start to fade out as he is standing on the block then there will be complete silence and a sound will indicate for him to start running when he gets to the end the camera will zoom in on his face.

Props: Headphones, Backpack, and running blocks

Costumes: Nike Spikes, Warm-up clothing(Jacket and Pants), Black running shorts, running shirt

Location: On the track. He will be running. They offer a close to the ground feel and stability.

Schedule:

-10/10: Planning-

10/14: Storyboarding

-10/21: Film

-10/23: Editing

Backup Plan: In the case it starts raining then will have a race between students in the hallway. Student 1 will yell to another student “do you want to race?!” then student 2 will say yes and put on his nike shoes. Student 1 will put on a different brand that isn’t as fast as nike. There will be another student in the middle who will say go then the two students will take off. Student 1 will trip and fall while the student 2 runs ahead to the finish line. Student 2 will win the race because in this scenario Nike is the better shoe option. At the end the student 2 will say “ You could have...only if you had Nike” while holding the shoes up.

Editing Lesson

Today in class we went over how to edit. Editing entails importing, cutting, and creating a title.
Every time you check out a camera you have to fill out an equipment agreement. This insures that students are responsible for the equipment they use. Pinnacle studio is a software used for editing, as well. Students have to take the SD card and insert it into the SD reader. Only one person can log in at a time. Then the SD reader must be taken out and put into the USB holder. Students should create a folder and click the USB and the DCMI. If you are unable to find your video then you must click private and then AVCMD.

When you take out the footage from the camera you must move it into the camera. When importing, students must import from the computer to the desktop. Then, students must go to Pinnacle and click import and look for their folder, once they have checked everything they have to click start then import. When creating a track, students must drag the box down and build an AV Track, with a title, film, and sound. When cutting, students must move to the right before they cut and click razor blade. They must also click the yellow box and hit delete. After students should add a transition, in order to do that they must click and cut effect editor than select their transition. When they are finished they should click file, save movie as whatever they like, name it, put it in a folder, then save.

Editing also entails creating a title. When creating a title students must click "t" and type their title. After, they have to drag their title over to their track and click to edit their title. In order to add music students must make a MPEG-4. To make a sound students must click right and hit detach audio. To save, students must click export, when they are finished with their whole project. After they are finished they need to type "MPEG-4." Then select the best quality and start to export.

Researching: Codes & Conventions

Our group chose to do a Nike commercial. We had to research on what is the norms of a nike commercial or shoes commercial. Some things that we observed where the camera angles, camera movements, and different sounds. In a Nike commercial there were a lot of different camera movements that they used to convey their theme/message. In this specific video they use pan shots while the runners where running down the track. One thing that we saw a lot in the nike videos where zoom up’s of the nike sign on the clothing and/or shoes. There were many close ups of the athlete’s faces, showing their facial expressions. The use of close ups showed all the passion they had for their sport, but you also saw the anger and disappointment when they lost or something went wrong.
We also noticed how some of the nike commercials we watched had diegetic sounds, dialogue, and soundtracks. Most of the dialogue put in these commercials where words of encouragement toward the athletes in these commercials. There were mainly voiceover in the videos showing the thoughts the athletes had as they were getting prepared for the game or meet. One thing that we saw and liked was the use of the person's breathing sounds as they were finished. We plan to incorporate something like this in our own commercial.
As we were talking over idea for the commercial we think the hardest part will be trying to get a tracking shot without a dolly. When you only have so many equipment available to you it’s hard to get the shots we want. It will be interesting to see what we’ll have to do to get what we what.

Introductory

Remember when you were younger and you thought you could fly. I remember my experience with that too vividly. When I was six, my cousin told me I couldn’t jump off the dresser because I was a girl. Let’s just say this resulted in my older cousin trying to pull out a needle in my foot and a trip to the Emergency room. I was what I like to call a very determined little girl. My name is Dwana and I just recently turned 17 on the 17th of September, which means I am a Virgo the best sign there is obviously. I am a junior in high school which means I'm almost out of here. I am currently taking what seems to be like all these stressful classes that make me want to rip my hair out, but I need to be successful in one way or another. One interesting thing about me is that my personality type is mediator. Which basically means that I don’t like problems so I don’t like to mingle with too many people.
My interests are what any interest of a teenage girl. I like to binge watch Netflix series. More recently since taking this media class while watching tv I am able to point out camera angles and camera movements. While I’m not calling out camera angles while watching Netflix, I am an avid reader. My favorite type of books are cliche romance books and thrillers. I love to be around my family because they are loud and can put anyone in a bad mood the happiest I am an indoors person who doesn’t care too much for bugs and being hot and sweaty. My list of dislikes isn’t that big of a list. I don’t like being being in large crowds. I absolutely hate grapefruit. I also am not too fond of school, but what can i do.
Now the reason I took this class well if we’re being honest I just needed the AICE credit. However after we did our first storyboard is when I really realized that the class might be one of the most interesting class I will take in my high school life. For me the class is being able to learn all the steps it takes to make my favorite movies, not only am I able to learn I can make my own commercials, music videos, and even movie clips. I really hope that I am able to have fun while passing this course.
